    PART-1

Working with 64 bit Microsoft Trial or Evaluation VM Images

    Questions:
What do you do if you downloaded the Preconfigured VM images for your favourite Microsoft 64 bit software from the MS Downloads site (as listed below), but do not have Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V installed on your 64 bit notebook or desktop computer and you don’t have the money buy additional software?
What do you do when you find out that most of these VM images are not configured for the limited amount of hardware resources (RAM, CPU, etc.)
    Answer?
Use VirtualBox with your Microsoft preconfigured VM image and fine tune the VM settings
I developed the following Graphical Step-by-Step procedures to ensure that you can demonstrate trial or evaluation VM images without purchasing and using Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V. I also added steps to increase performance specifically for the Project Server 2010 image, however you can use the same procedures for the SharePoint Server 2010 image too.
In this series I divided the procedures into the following four parts:
Part 1 of 4 – Working with 64 bit Microsoft Trial or Evaluation VM Images
Step 1 – Download and Prepare a 64 bit Microsoft Trial or Evaluation VM Image:
Step 2 – Read the Hyper-V VM Image Documentation:
Part 2 of 4 – Working with VirtualBox
Step 3 – Download, Install and Configure VirtualBox:
Step 4 – Create the VirtualBox Virtual Machine:
Step 5 – Configure Virtual Machine Settings:
Step 6 – Install VirtualBox Guest Additions:
Part 3 of 4 – Working with Virtual Machine Performance
Step 7 – Modify the Network Configuration and DNS Settings:
Step 8 – Disable Services Not Required:
Step 9 – Configure SQL Server 2008 Maximum Server Memory Settings:
Step 10 – Remove Software Not Required:
    Part 4 of 4 – Reconfiguring SharePoint 2010 Settings
Step 11 – Uninstall Microsoft Office Web Applications and Reset SharePoint Server:
Step 12 – Switch SharePoint Applications from Kerberos Authentication to NTLM Authentication:
Step 13 – Reconfigure SharePoint Application Pools:
Step 14 – Stopping SharePoint Web Sites:
Step 15 – Stopping Unnecessary SharePoint Services:
Step 1 – Download and Prepare a 64 bit Microsoft Trial or Evaluation VM Image:
Here’s a list of Hyper-V Trial or Evaluation VM Images that I compiled from the Microsoft Download site:
Microsoft Project Server 2010 Beta – VM
This download comes as a pre-configured Virtual Machine and enables you evaluate Microsoft Project Server 2010 Beta.

Visual Studio® Team System 2008 VSTS Hyper-V Image (Trial)
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is the next-generation development tool for Windows Vista, the 2007 Office System, and the Web
Visual Studio® Team System 2008 TFS Hyper-V Image (Trial)
Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server is an integrated collaboration server for Visual Studio Team System.
Intelligent Application Gateway 2007 Virtual Machine Trial Version
Microsoft Whale Communications IAG 2007 Service Pack 2 with Application Optimizers provides SSL VPN, a Web application firewall, and endpoint security management that enable access control, authorization, and content inspection for a wide variety of line-of-business applications. IMPORTANT - you must register to receive the activation key for this software.
In my case, I’ll download the Microsoft Project Server 2010 Beta – VM from the link as shown above.
    1. On the Microsoft Download page, click Continue .

You will then need to log in using a Live ID and possibly complete an online form. When you are finished you will then be able to download individual compressed files that comprises one big VHD file, and a few other files.
    2. On the Microsoft Download page, click on Download.

    3. In the File Download – Security Warning dialog box, click Save.

    4. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to a folder location where you will store all the downloaded files, and click Save.
In my case, I used the F:\Temp folder.

    5. Continue downloading all the files.
    6. When finished, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder location where you saved all the files and double click the 2010-4a Project Server 2010.part01.exe file

    7. In the WinRAR self-extracting archive dialog box, verify the Destination Folder is the same folder location where you saved all the files, and click Install.
    In may case that’s F:\Temp

    8. When finished, double click on the new folder and search for the .VHD file.
Look for a folder name Virtual Hard Disks, Virtual HD or VHD

    9. When you have found the .VHD file, copy or move the file to the location of the Default Hard Disk Folder in the Sun VirtualBox Console preferences (back in Step 1 – 11)
In my case, the file was 2010-4a.vhd and the folder location was F:\Demo Machines\Images

Step 2 – Read the Hyper-V VM Image Documentation:
Now before we jump right into creating and running the virtual machine, it would be a good idea to review any of the documentation (hopefully there is documentation) for any clues how the Hyper-V VMs are configured so we can replicate the same configuration for the VirtualBox VMs we’ll be creating in the next step.
In my case, there is a Word file named Setting up the Host Machine for the SharePoint 2010 Virtual Machines.docx and here is some of the configuration info:
    Virtual Machine Software and Pre-Configuration

Virtual machine “a” contains the following pre-configured software:

    1. Windows Server 2008 SP2 Standard Edition x64, running as an Active Directory Domain Controller for the “CONTOSO.COM” domain with DNS and WINS
    2. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise Edition with Analysis, Notification, and Reporting Services
    3. Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007 R2
    4. Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 Ultimate Edition
    5. Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise Edition Beta 2
    6. Microsoft Office Web Applications Beta 2
    7. FAST Search for SharePoint 2010 Beta 2
    8. Microsoft Project Server 2010 Beta 2
    9. Microsoft Office “Mondo” 2010 Beta 2
    10. Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2

    Network Configuration
Uses the Hyper-V Internal network that limits the connectivity to only VMs and the host.
Actual Network Adapter connected is “VM Bus Network Adapter”

    1. IP address: 192.168.150.1
    2. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    3. Default gateway: (leave blank)
    4. Preferred DNS server: 192.168.150.1

This should give us enough information to create the VirtualBox virtual machine

    • FAST Search for SharePoint Sam Worker
    • Hyper-V Data Exchange Service
    • Hyper-V Guest Shutdown Service
    • Hyper-V Heartbeat Service
    • Hyper-V Time Synchronization Service
    • Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor
    • Office Communications Server Application Host

    • Office Communications Server Telephony Conferencing
    • Office Communications Server Web Conferencing
    • SQL Server (RTC)
    • Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant
    • Windows Search

Step 9 – Configure SQL Server 2008 Maximum Server Memory Settings:
One of the most common mistakes that builders of demo virtual machine forget to do is set a maximum amount of memory that SQL Server can use. They forget that the default Maximum Server Memory setting is 2,147,483,647 MB. That over 2 billion megabytes (not bytes), which pretty much means take SQL Server will take as much RAM as it needs.
Now this wouldn’t be a problem for a dedicated, production SQL Server, but for a single virtual machine that has other major software included like IIS and SharePoint (OWSTIMER.exe) this will be a HUGE problem. Take a look below at how much memory SQL Server (sqlserver.exe) is taking.

    So let’s change this…
    1. From the desktop, click Start –> All Programs –> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 –> SQL Server Management Studio
    2. In the Connect to Server dialog box, click Connect.

    3. In the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio console, right click DEMO2010A and click Properties.

    4. In the Server Properties – DEMO2010A dialog box, under Select a page, select Memory, in the Maximum server memory (in MB) box, type 512 and click OK.

    5. Close the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio console and restart the virtual machine.
(You could also restart the SQL Server services, but I found it easier to restart the virtual machine.)
Now look at Windows Task Manager and see how much memory sqlserver.exe has taken.

    PLEASE NOTE:
The memory settings used in this example is purely subjective based on the actual hardware used to host the virtual machines. So depending on your hardware you may need to increase the amount of memory for SQL Server 2008.

Step 10 – Remove Software Not Required:
    1. Log on as CONTOSO\administrator with the password of pass@word1.
    2. From the desktop, click Start –> Control Panel –> Programs and Features.
    3. In the Programs and Features window, select Microsoft Office Send-a-Smile and click Uninstall.
    4. In the Programs and Features dialog box, click Yes.
    5. In the Microsoft Office Send-a-Smile dialog box, click OK.
    6. Repeat steps 3-5 for Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2

    19. On the This completes the Farm Configuration Wizard page, click Finish.

    20. Close the Central Administration page and restart the virtual machine.

Step 12 – Switch SharePoint Applications from Kerberos Authentication to NTLM Authentication:
    1. Log on as CONTOSO\administrator with the password of pass@word1.
    2. From the desktop, click Start –> Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products –> SharePoint 2010 Central Administration.
    3. On the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration page, under Application Management. click Manage web applications.

    4. On the Application Management page, click SharePoint Central Administration v4, on the toolbar menu, click Authentication Providers.

    5. On the Authentication Providers dialog box, click Default.

    6. In the Edit Authentication dialog box, in the IIS Authentication Settings section, select NTLM and click Save.
May take up to 5 minutes to complete.

If you received an error, you can safely ignore it.
    7. Minimize Internet Explorer.

Step 13 – Reconfigure SharePoint Application Pools:
I always check the Event Viewer in the Administration Tools to see if there are some interesting or goofy things happening on the restart. Well it just so happens I found some interesting things that might cause some concern.
In the System logs I found 8 Warnings stating that websites that had following warnings:
“The application '/_vti_bin/sts' belonging to site '656431585' has an invalid AppPoolId 'SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool' set. Therefore, the application will be ignored.

Here is the list of web sites that have the same error:

    • 226326605
    • 656431585
    • 723399476
    • 1672993969
    • 1748381272
    • 1802242226
    • 1954992651
    • 2105523502

So the next thing we need to do put a name to the site IDs
    1. From the desktop, click Start –> Administrative Tools –> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
    2. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager console, in the navigation pane, expand DEMO2010A –> Sites,

So here is are the site names that match the IDs

    • 226326605 – LCA Web

    • 1802242226 – IT Web
    • 1954992651 – Intranet
    • 2105523502 – MOSS – Project Server

Let’s check out why we have the error with our first site LCA Web
    3. In the navigation pane, expand Sites –> LCA Web –> _vti_bin –> sts, right click sts, select Manage Application and click Advanced Settings.

    4. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, click Application Pool, then click the ellipse button ()

    5. In the Select Application Pool dialog box, notice the message under Properties.
But based on the list Application Pools, which one is the right one for this site?

    6. From the desktop, click Start –> All Programs –> Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products –> SharePoint 2010 Management Shell.
    7. From the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell window, type the following command and press Enter:
    SPIisWebServiceApplicationPool | select ID, Name
So the SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool is really using GUID 9bcc72ae-81c1-47d3-873e-ea87006c6f8a
    8. Close the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell window.
    9. In the Select Application Pool dialog box, under Application Pool, select 9bcc72ae-81c1-47d3-873e-ea87006c6f8a and click OK.

    10. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, click OK.
    11. Repeats steps 4-11 for each previously listed site.

Step 14 – Stopping SharePoint Web Sites:
The next step is to stop SharePoint web sites that are not configured or finalized, like Finance Web (finweb.contoso.com)
(Whenever you a SharePoint Template Selection page like this, that means that it is not configure yet)
