    Ethernet over Power

    --------------------------------
What is Ethernet over Power( aka power line communications or just EOP )
Ethernet over power are devices designed to carry data over a conductor that is also designed to carry electrical power ( eg between power points in your house )
    -------------------------------
What are the limitations of EOP
The limitations of EOP are as follows
    Devices must live behind the
    - same power meter
    - same power phase
    - same RCD ( aka earth leakage breaker )
    - same surge protector if fitted
    - they can live on different circuit breakers or fuses as long as the above criteria is adhered to.
It is also generally accepted that EOP devices should not be plugged through local surge protected power boards as certain types of surge protectors will effect sync rates and throughput
    ------------------------
    EOP types
The standard known as HomePlugAV brings together all manufactures to conform to the same standard and thus allow different brands to work with each other
Interoperability of units requires setting the same "Private Network Name " on each adapter no matter the brand , this is done by downloading the utility from your manufactures web site.
There are generally 3 speeds types associated with EOP's , the first was the 85M adapter series which is generally now considered outdated as it was slow and in most cases not compliant with homeplug standards
The 2 current EOP speed sync types are
    200M adapters
    500M adapters
Note the figures above refer to the max sync rate the adapters can achieve , this is not the speeds or throughput they will perform at
    --------------------
    EOP plug and play
If you buy a pair of EOP's they should and will work straight out of the box with only a simple push of a button to "pair " them together ( check your instruction sheet )
If you wish to run multiple EOP devices on the same lan , you must ensure the "private network names" are set the same using the device utility available from its manufacturer web site
    --------------------
    Are powerline networks secure?
All current 200M and 500M adapters use Homeplug AV uses 128 bit AES encryption , they do how ever come with a default private network name and it is suggested this be changed with the utility from the manufacturer web site as a further security measure.
    ----------------------
Number of EOP's that can be used together
yes you can run multiple units connected together , the max connected units is 15 and all must have the same private network name as mentioned above
You can also run individual pairs of EOP devices that are separated from each other by using different private network names for each individual pair of EOP devices
    -----------------------
    EOP throughput
The average speeds you can expect from these adapters are
    200M adapters – approx 5MB/s throughput
    500M adapters – approx 10MB/s throughput
These are average speeds tested over different points around a house then combined to give these average figures ( line conditions will effect results )
    --------------------
What effects the speed of EOP devices
Many factors can effect the sync and thus throughput speed of EOP's , just like wireless, EOP's sync together using the handshake principle , the adapters talk to each other and look at the line quality, distance and noise factors and then between them find a sync that will keep the devices stable
    These factors can include
Noise on the power line ( eg dirty power )
Old wiring , bad connections , corrosion etc
power adapters injecting noise onto the power line
adapters being to close to emf sources , ev power adapters , tv,s , microwaves etc
The more these factors effect your power line the lower your connected sync rate will be and the slower the throughput / speeds will be
    --------------------
    EOP recommendations
There are plenty of EOP's recommended in the previous thread and i will avoid recommending any myself in this post , others can post their recommendations and results
EOP has its place in most local area networks , but it is not a replacement for wired Ethernet and nor does it claim to be , i will say that for streaming EOP works far better than wifi in my testing
