IOS 12.2(55)SE was released last Thursday for the 2960 switch (as well as others). With this release comes a HUGE enhancement, in my opinion, for the 2960 switch, layer 3 routing! This previously layer 2 only switch can now do basic static routing with the new SDM template in this version. No routing protocols are supported but this is a great boon for those of us with this switch who wanted this feature.
You will notice that before upgrading the switch there is no ‘ip routing’ command:
Switch(config)#ip rou?
% Unrecognized command
Switch(config)#ip rou
Also, take note of the SDM templates that are available prior to 12.2(55)SE:
Switch(config)#sdm prefer ?
default Default bias
dual-ipv4-and-ipv6 Support both IPv4 and IPv6
qos QoS bias
Switch(config)#sdm prefer
Now, with 12.2(55)SE installed, we will change our SDM template to the new ‘lanbase-routing’ template:
Switch#show sdm prefer ?
default Default bias
dual-ipv4-and-ipv6 Support both IPv4 and IPv6
lanbase-routing Lanbase routing
qos QoS bias
| Output modifiers
Switch#show sdm prefer
Switch(config)#sdm prefer lanbase-routing
Changes to the running SDM preferences have been stored, but cannot take effect
until the next reload.
Use 'show sdm prefer' to see what SDM preference is currently active.
Switch(config)#
After a reload, let’s take a look at our SDM template:
Switch#show sdm prefer
The current template is "lanbase-routing" template.
The selected template optimizes the resources in
the switch to support this level of features for
8 routed interfaces and 255 VLANs.
number of unicast mac addresses: 4K
number of IPv4 IGMP groups + multicast routes: 0.25K
number of IPv4 unicast routes: 4.25K
number of directly-connected IPv4 hosts: 4K
number of indirect IPv4 routes: 0.25K
number of IPv4 policy based routing aces: 0
number of IPv4/MAC qos aces: 0.125k
number of IPv4/MAC security aces: 0.375k

We can now enable IP routing:
Switch(config)#ip routing
Switch(config)#
Great! It took the command. Let’s try adding a couple of routes…
Switch(config)#ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.20.2.1
Switch(config)#ip route 10.99.1.0 255.255.255.0 172.20.2.11
Switch(config)#ip route 10.100.1.0 255.255.255.0 172.20.2.11
Switch(config)#end
Switch#

For more information, take a look at the release notes here as well as the new features section where you will notice the line item: “When you configure the new lanbase-routing SDM template, the switch supports static routing and router ACLs on SVIs. ( Catalyst 2960, 2960-S, and 2975)”.
