Xp 32 bit Service Pack 3

    Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) enables a Windows computer to share its Internet connection with computers on local area networks. It's been around since Windows 98 SE, and with the launch of Windows XP, it's only gotten better.

Windows XP ICS has some notable advantages over the versions of ICS in Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Me:

    • It's easier to set up. There's no software to install, and it doesn't add any network components or protocols.
    • It's much more reliable and much less likely to cause network problems.
    • You can create a Network Bridge connecting two or more local area networks and share the Internet connection with the computers on all of them. This is especially useful if your XP computer is connected to both a wired and wireless network.
    • ICS client computers can use XP's Internet Gateway to monitor and control the server computer's Internet connection. If you have a dial-up connection, you can connect and disconnect when deciding whether to enable ICS.

However, XP ICS is missing some features of those earlier versions. You can't disable the DHCP server, change the server computer's IP address, or change the range of addresses allocated by the DHCP server.

Consider these points when deciding whether to enable ICS.

WARNING #1: When you enable ICS, the network adapter connected to the local area network is assigned a static IP address of 192.168.0.1. The client computers are assigned other IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range. These addresses may not be compatible with an existing network

WARNING #2: Don't enable ICS if any computer in your network is configured as a domain controller, DHCP server, or DNS server. Don't enable it if another computer is running ICS or Network Address Translation (NAT).

WARNING #3: To enable ICS, you must be logged on as a user that is a member of the Administrators group.

WARNING #4: If you establish a Virtual Private Networking (VPN) connection while sharing a different connection, the client computers won't be able to access the Internet until the VPN connection is ended.
    Preparing for ICS

The ICS server computer must have two network connections: one for the Internet, and one for the local area network. The Internet connection may be a dial-up (PPP or ISDN), cable modem, DSL, or other broadband Ethernet connection. The LAN connection may be a wired, wireless, or even a USB Ethernet connection. Before enabling ICS:

    • Set up your Internet connection and test it so that you know you can connect to the Internet.
    • Decide whether to allow client computers to control the server's Internet connection using the Internet Gateway. This feature is automatically available on clients running Windows XP. On clients running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Me, you must run XP's Network Setup Wizard to enable the gateway. If you have a Windows XP CD-ROM, you can run the Wizard from it. Otherwise, create a network setup disk containing the Wizard files.

Enabling ICS on the Server Computer

You can enable ICS either manually or by using XP's Network Setup Wizard.

To use the Wizard, see our page on Server Setup Using the Network Setup Wizard. You must use this method if you need to create a network setup disk.

You can also enable ICS manually for a dial-up Internet connection or enable ICS manually for a broadband Internet connection.
    Configuring ICS Client Computers

Now configure the other networked computers as ICS clients. Follow these links for computers running Windows 95 or Windows 2000 Professional. For Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, or Windows XP, stay with these instructions for XP Client Wizard.

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard Windows XP has a built-in Network Setup Wizard that makes it easy to configure networking on computers running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows XP. The Wizard does not work on computers running Windows 95, Windows NT, or Windows 2000.
The Wizard can perform these tasks on a Windows XP computer:

    • Set up the computer as an Internet Connection Sharing server, which shares its Internet connection with other networked computers.

    • Set up the computer as an Internet Connection Sharing client, which accesses the Internet through another computer.

    • Create a bridge between two or more network connections, combining them into a single logical connection.

    • Create a floppy disk containing the Wizard files so that the Wizard can run on another computer.

To start the Network Setup Wizard on a Windows XP computer, use either of these two ways:

    • Open the Network Connections folder. Under Network Tasks, click Set up a home or small office network.

    • Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | Communications | Network Setup Wizard.

To start the Network Setup Wizard on a computer running Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, or Millennium Edition, use either of these two ways. If the Run command doesn't appear on the Start Menu, hold down the Windows key on the keyboard and press R to get the Run box:

    • Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in the computer's CD-ROM drive. If the Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP screen doesn't appear automatically, click Start and Run, type D:\Setup in the box, and click OK. If your CD-ROM drive letter isn't D:, substitute the appropriate letter. Then click Perform additional tasks followed by Set up a home or small office network.

    • Insert a floppy disk containing the Wizard files in the computer's floppy drive. Click Start and Run, type A:\Netsetup in the box, and click OK.

If you started the Wizard from the CD-ROM or from a floppy disk, this screen appears. Click Next to continue.

If the Wizard is running on Windows 98/98SE/Me, it must restart your computer. Remove the floppy disk or CD and click OK.

The Wizard's Welcome screen then appears. Click Next to continue.

The Wizard displays a list of preliminary steps. If you haven't completed them, click Cancel to exit from the Wizard, complete the steps, and re-start the Wizard. Click Next.

Now, continue as appropriate for the task that you're performing.

XP ICS - Server Setup Using the Network Setup Wizard

It's Windows XP's Network Setup Wizard that makes it easy to configure an XP computer as an Internet Connection Sharing server.

Start the Network Setup Wizard by following the steps on this page. After completing each step, click Next to continue on to the next one. If you make a mistake or want to review the setup, click Back to return to the previous screen. To exit from the Wizard without completing the network setup, click Cancel.

Specify This computer connects directly to the Internet.

Select the Internet connection that will be shared with the networked computers. The Wizard will try to automatically determine which one to use. In this example, it correctly selected my cable modem connection.

If your computer has more than one local area network connection, the Wizard asks you to select which one(s) to use. Specify Let me choose the connections to my network.

Select the local area connection(s) that will share the Internet connection. If you select more than one, the Wizard will create a Network Bridge that joins the connections into one logical connection. In this example, I'm using a wireless network.

Enter a computer description and computer name. The description appears in My Network Places or Network Neighborhood on other networked computers. The computer name must be unique on the network. For maximum compatibility with all versions of Windows, use 1-12 alphanumeric characters, with no blanks.

Enter a workgroup name, which should be the same on all of the networked computers. Once again, use 1-12 alphanumeric characters, with no blanks. By default, the Wizard uses the name MSHOME. If your network uses a different name, enter it here.

The Wizard displays the settings that you've made. Scroll down the list to see all of them.

The Wizard then configures the computer's network settings. The process may appear to stop for a time, but let it continue to completion.

The Wizard then asks if you want to create a Network Setup Disk, which is a floppy disk that you can use to run the Network Setup Wizard on other computers to configure them as ICS clients. If your clients run Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, or Me, it's a good idea to run the Wizard on them. It enables them to use XP's Internet Gateway to control the ICS server's Internet connection. If you have a Windows XP CD-ROM, you can run the Wizard from it. If you want to run the Wizard but don't have the CD-ROM, specify Create a Network Setup Disk. Otherwise, specify one of the other choices.

If you told the Wizard to create a Network Setup Disk, it prompts you to insert a disk in the floppy disk drive. If you want to format the disk, erasing all of the existing files on it, click Format Disk. When you click Next, the Wizard writes its files to the disk.

While the Wizard is creating the disk, this screen appears. Wait for it to complete before continuing.

If you created a setup disk, remove it from the drive. Then click Next to complete the network configuration.

When the configuration is complete, the Wizard's Completion screen appears. Click Finish to exit.

Click Yes to restart your computer automatically, or click No to restart it manually.

The ICS server is now set up to share its Internet connection. Now configure the ICS client computers.

XP ICS - Manual Server Setup - Broadband Connection

Before setting up the ICS server for a broadband (cable modem, DSL) connection, make sure that you've completed the preliminary steps listed here.

Open the Network and Dial-up Connections folder. Then right click the Internet connection that you want to share and select Properties.

The Properties sheet shows the network components associated with the connection.

Click the Advanced tab, then check Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection.

If you have more than one network adapter connected to local area networks, you'll see this screen instead. Click the down arrow and select the one to use for sharing the Internet connection. In this example, I'm using a wireless network.

Check Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection if you wish to allow that capability on client computers running Windows 98, Me, or XP. For more information, read about the Internet Gateway.

Click OK. If your local area network adapter already has an IP address assigned, WinXP warns you that it will change it. Click Yes to continue.

The ICS server is now set up to share a broadband connection. Now configure the ICS client computers.

XP ICS - Manual Server Setup - Dial-Up Connection

Before setting up the ICS server for a dial-up connection, make sure that you've completed the preliminary steps listed here.

Open the Network and Dial-up Connections folder. Then right click the Dial-up connection that you want to share and select Properties.

Check Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet if you want the ICS server to automatically connect to the Internet. Otherwise, you'll have to connect manually whenever any computer wants Internet access.

Check Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection if you want to allow that capability on client computers running Windows 98, Me, or XP. For more information, read about the Internet Gateway.

Click OK. If your local area network adapter already has an IP address assigned, WinXP warns you that it will change it. Click Yes to continue.

The ICS server is now set up to share a Dial-up connection. Now configure the ICS client computers

XP ICS - Client Setup Using the Network Setup Wizard

Windows XP has a built-in Network Setup Wizard that makes it easy to configure a computer running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows XP as an Internet Connection Sharing client. You'll need to check our previous setup articles if you're configuring a Windows 95 client or a Windows 2000 client.

Start the Network Setup Wizard. If the Wizard refuses to run, saying that it can't find a network card, make sure that your network card is properly installed. If it is, the driver program for your network card probably doesn't conform to the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) standard. In that case, you'll have to configure the client as described on our Windows 95/98SE/Me Setup page.

If a Windows 98 client computer is running Internet Explorer 5.0 or an earlier version, this screen appears, advising you to update to version 5.01 or greater. Click OK to continue. If you wish to upgrade Internet Explorer, cancel the Wizard and run it again after the upgrade is complete.

Specify This computer connects to the Internet through another computer (the ICS server), and click Next.

If the computer has more than one network connection, this screen appears. Specify Let me choose the connections to my network and click Next.

Select the connection to the ICS server and click Next.

Be default, the Wizard uses the name MSHOME. If your network uses a different name, enter it here.

The Wizard displays the settings that you've made. Scroll down the list to see all of them. To change a setting, click Back. To accept the settings, click Next. To stop running the Wizard, click Cancel.

The Wizard then configures the computer's network settings. The process may appear to stop for a time, but let it continue to completion.

If the Wizard is running on a Windows XP computer, this screen appears. Specify Just finish the wizard and click Next.

When the configuration is complete, the Wizard's Completion screen appears. Click Finish to exit.

    XP ICS - Internet Gateway

Windows XP's Internet Connection Sharing allows an ICS client computer to remotely monitor and control the ICS server computer's Internet connection. This Internet Gateway feature is available on computers running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows XP that have been configured as an ICS client using XP's Network Setup Wizard. It isn't available if you've configured the clients manually.

If you're sharing an always-on DSL or cable modem connection, a client computer can enable or disable it. If you're sharing a dial-up connection, a client computer can connect or disconnect it, causing the ICS server computer to dial in or hang up. This can be a great convenience, since you don't have to go to the server computer to take these actions. But it can cause trouble if someone disables or disconnects the server's connection while other people are using the Internet.

In the examples below, I'm sharing a cable modem connection. If you're sharing a dial-up connection, you'll see buttons labeled Connect and Disconnect instead of Enable and Disable.

Continue below for information on using the Internet Gateway on Windows XP, or view Windows 95/98SE/Me information.
Using the Internet Gateway on Windows XP

To monitor the ICS server's Internet connection on a computer running Windows XP, open the Network Connections folder and double click the Internet Gateway icon.

The upper half of the Status window gives information about the ICS server's Internet connection. The lower half shows network statistics for the server and client computers.

Click the Disable or Disconnect button to turn off the server's Internet connection.

If the Status window isn't open, you can turn off the connection by right-clicking it and selecting Disable or Disconnect.

Click the Properties button to configure the Internet Gateway. To put an icon in the system tray, check Show icon in notification area when connected. Click Settings to enable other computers to access services that run on this computer.

To turn on the server's Internet connection after turning it off, double click the Internet Gateway or right click it and select Enable or Connect.

Using the Internet Gateway on Windows 95/98SE/Me

To monitor the ICS server's Internet connection on a computer running Windows 98, 98SE, or Me, right click the Internet Gateway icon in the system tray and select Status.

The upper half of the Status window gives information about the ICS server's Internet connection. The lower half shows network statistics for the server and client computers.

Click the Disable or Disconnect button to turn off the server's Internet connection.

You can also turn off the server's Internet connection by right-clicking the Internet Gateway icon in the system tray and selecting Disable or Disconnect.

Click the Properties button to configure the Internet Gateway. To put an icon in the system tray, check Show icon in taskbar notification area when connected. Click Services to enable other computers to access services that run on this computer.

To turn on the server's Internet connection after turning it off, right click the Internet Gateway icon in the system tray and select Enable or Connect.
