PPPoA (Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)) is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in ATM AAL5 (Adaptation Layer 5). It is used mainly with cable modem, DSL and ADSL services.
Most ADSL providers use PPPoA (Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM) to establish Internet connections for end-users. To set up a Linksys gateway, you need to enable PPPoA on the gateway’s web-based setup page.
To setup a Linksys gateway with an ADSL connection you need to perform four steps:
- Verifying Internet Connection
- Connecting the Devices Together
- Checking the LEDs
- Setting-Up an ADSL on a Linksys Gateway
Verifying Internet Connection
Ensure when setting up the Linksys ADSL Gateway that the Internet connection line is active. If not, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP). After ensuring that the Internet connection is active, connect the devices together. For instructions, follow the steps below.
Connecting the Devices Together
Connect the ADSL line and computer to the gateway. For instructions, click
here. After connecting the devices together, check the LED’s of the gateway. For instructions, follow the steps below.
Checking the LEDs
Check the LEDs on gateway that are lit. For instructions, click
here. After checking the LED’s on the gateway, setup the ADSL ISP settings on the gateway. For instructions, follow the steps below.
Setting-Up an ADSL on a Linksys Gateway Step 1:
Access the gateway’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click
here.
NOTE: If you are using Mac to access the gateway’s web-based setup page, click
here.
Step 2:
When the gateway’s web-based setup page appears, look for
Encapsulation and select
RFC 2364 PPPoA on the drop-down arrow. Look for
VC Settings and select the appropriate
Multiplexing.
NOTE: ISP’s provide the type of
Multiplexing to use for the connection you have. In this example, we used
VC.
Step 3:
Look for
Autodetect and select
Disable then under
Virtual Circuit type the
VCI and
VPI range.
NOTE: ISP’s provide
VPI and
VCI range for the
Virtual Circuit. In this example, we used “
0” for VPI and “
38” for
VCI.
NOTE: If your ISP didn’t provide the virtual circuit information, set the Autodetect to
Enable.
Step 4:
Under
User Name and
Password enter the username and password that your ADSL ISP provided you, including the domain in the username if necessary such as
yourusername@isp.net.
NOTE: If you are using
WRT320N, skip
Step 1 to
Step 3.
Step 5:
Click
.
Step 6:
Click
Status.
Step 7:
Look for
Login Status and check if it's
Connected. If it’s connected, you should be able to access the Internet.
NOTE: If
Login Status is
Disconnected, click
.
Note: For WAG160N, the
Status page does not have a
Login Status. The Internet will connect automatically and if it does not then just click
Connect.
