We currently have a free VMware Server ESX 3i 3.5.0 123629 which is hosting 2 VM machines. We want to upgrade that to the latest one which seems to be VMware vSphere Hypervisor -ESXi

1- Is VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) free?
2- Is there any step-by-step guide for the upgrade process?
3- If we want to use "VMware Data Recovery" is that necessary to also have Vcenter? or we can just install "VMware Data Recovery"?
4- Where should we install "VMware Data Recovery"? on current VM server on on another physical server?
5- Is there any step-by-step guide for installing "VMware Data Recovery"?

The server is located in Canada so please consider licensing-
