    Install MDaemon

Introduction MDaemon is available as a download from Alt-N Technologies - Download Issues.
    Requirements
Information You Need You need to know this information and answer these questions:

    • Installation directory, the default is the \MDaemon directory on your start up disk.
    • Name of the individual or company owning the MDaemon license.
    • Name of your Alt-N distributor.
    • The IP addresses of the Domain Name Servers you want the email server to use. You can also use the Windows default DNS servers.
    • The first and last name, plus the email address, of your first account holder. Also, do you want this person to be the email administrator?
    • Do you want MDaemon to run as a Windows service?
    • Domain name of your email server. If your ISP is aliasing all of the mail you receive — that is, if you do not have a registered domain name — use company.mail, the default, as your domain name.
    • Do you want to run MDaemon with the Advanced or Easy interface? You can always change this later.

Hardware and Software MDaemon most likely runs on both the hardware and the version of Windows you already own. Depending on its intended use, for instance, MDaemon runs on relatively small machines with any Windows version from Win95 OSR2 through XP Professional, plus the various Windows Servers.
These are the minimum recommended system requirements for MDaemon to run. This does not take into account running multiple programs simultaneously. To run several programs on one computer at the same time, that computer should exceed these recommendations.

    • Computer with Pentium III 500 MHz (or higher) processor
    • 512 MB of memory (1 GB recommended)
    • Typical fard disk space required: 30MB, plus additional space for any mail to be stored
    • Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2/98/ME/XP/NT/2000/2003 operating system
    • Winsock 2 for Windows 95 OSR2
    • Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher
    • Ethernet Network Card
    • TCP/IP network protocol installed
    • Internet or Intranet communication capabilities

Note: MDaemon is no longer compatible with the original Windows 95 release. MDaemon now requires Windows 95 OSR2 or higher. Windows 95 installations require WinSock 2.0 to be installed.
    How To
The instructions start with downloading the MDaemon installer, from Alt-N’s web site:

    1. Go to Alt-N Technologies - Download Issues with any recent web browser and click on the Download button for MDaemon.
    2. Click on a language link. The Alt-N “swish” shows which language you have selected.
    3. Select the MDaemon... link to enter contact information. You can also review Alt-N’s privacy policy from this screen.
    4. Enter your contact information and use the Continue button. This displays your web browser’s dialogs for saving a download.
    5. Download the file to your local drive.
    6. Record the name of the folder where you download the installer, so you can find it for the next step.
    7. Navigate to the downloaded installer and open it to display the installation wizard.
    8. Use the Next button.
    9. If you agree with the license agreement, click on the I Agree button.
    10. Select the installation directory (or keep the default) and use the Next button.
    11. Enter the name of your company, plus the name of your distributor or reseller. These are for documentation purposes. If you have a license key, enter it. Otherwise MDaemon assigns a 30-day trial license key. Use the Next button.

    12. You are now ready to install.
    13. Use the Next button to install the software. A progress bar shows your current status.
When the installation is done you now set up the basic configuration.
    14. Enter the domain name of your email server, such as poboxes.shacknet.nu or yourcompany.com. If your ISP is aliasing all of the mail you receive — that is, if you do not have a registered domain name — then use the default company.mail as your domain name. Then use the Next button.
    15. Enter the Full name, Mailbox and Password for your first user. Activate the check box if you want the user to be the administrator. The administrator can change account information and system configurations. Use the Next button.
    16. Enter the IP addresses of the DNS servers you want the email server to use. You can also choose to use the DNS servers configured for the version of Windows running on the host machine. Use the Next button.
    17. Choose whether you want to operate MDaemon in Easy Mode or Advanced Mode. Easy mode contains the basic menus and a simple screen for monitoring MDaemon. It also has fewer configurable options for each command, with MDaemon using “intelligent defaults” for the other options. Advanced mode provides access to all MDaemon commands and options. The advanced monitor provides many different ways to view server activity. Use the Next button.
    18. Choose whether to run MDaemon as a System Service. When MDaemon is configured as a system service you do not need to have a user logged in to run MDaemon. Use the Next button.
    19. Activate the option to start MDaemon and use the Finish button to complete the installation and start MDaemon. If you entered a license key during installation, when you start MDaemon it displays a dialog asking you to activate your license key. See the section called Activate MDaemon for instructions.
After you have installed MDaemon can now set up your email accounts.

    Activate MDaemon

    Introduction
MDaemon comes with a 30-day trial license. After the 30 days you must register and activate MDaemon to continue using the software.
Registering means you enter your purchased license key into MDaemon. Activation records your license key with Alt-N and stores an activation code in MDaemon. You can activate MDaemon automatically or manually.
    Requirements
You must have a purchased license key to register and activate MDaemon.
You must obtain an activation code from Alt-N Technologies: Product Activation to manually activate MDaemon. The manual process provides a link to this web page.
    How To
When you register MDaemon during installation or after using a trial key, MDaemon asks you to activate your software. In response to this request, you can:

    • Automatically activate MDaemon.
    • Manually activate MDaemon.
    • Cancel the process and activate MDaemon later. Activation must be done within 30 days of registering your product key. The Help menu provides a command for doing this.

You can activate MDaemon when starting the email server or by using commands in the Help menu. Each method displays the Activation Wizard.

The first panel of the Activation Wizard briefly explains product activation.

    2. Select the option labeled I want to activate manually.
    3. Use the Next button to continue.
This displays a panel for entering the activation code. Note the Registration Key, Code, Product, Language and Version. Linking to the Activation web page from this panel automatically places these items in their correct locations on the form. However, you can also enter them manually.
    4. Click on the link labeled Click here to manually activate at Alt-N Technologies: Product Activation. This displays a web page for obtaining the activation code. The form should be filled in. You can also manually enter the requested information.
    5. Use the Submit button. This displays a web page containing your activation code.
    6. Follow the instructions on the web page and copy the specified lines.
    7. Return to the MDaemon Activation Wizard where you will see the codes entered for you. Note: If, for some reason, the MDaemon Activation Wizard was closed during the process, open the Wizard again and manually copy and paste the contents from the web page to the wizard.
    8. Use the Next button to continue. This displays the confirmation panel of the Activation Wizard.
    9. Use the Finish button to complete the process.
