    Installing Exchange 2007 SP2
You can use the following methods to install Exchange 2007 SP2:

    • Upgrade a computer that is running the original release version of Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2007 SP2.
    • Upgrade a computer that is running Exchange 2007 SP1 to Exchange 2007 SP2.
    • Perform a new installation of Exchange 2007 SP2.

In this article i detail the steps to upgrade a computer that is running Exchange 2007 SP1 to SP2.
Exchange Environment: We have an environment where there are a pair of CAS/HUB servers (CASHUB01 and CASHUB02) and a pair of Mailbox Servers in CCR (MBX01 and MBX02). The Cluster mailbox server name is CMMB01. Outlook Anywhere and OWA users connect through an ISA 2006 server in the DMZ to the CASHUB servers and then to Mailbox Sever CMMB01.
The Exchange environment is Exchange 2007 SP1 with update rollup 4.
    Sequence of upgrade will be CASHUB02, CASHUB01, MBX02, CMMB01 and MBX01.We will upgrade 4 physical servers (CASHUB01, CASHUB02, MBX01, MBX02) and one virtual server (CMMB01) from Exchange 2007 SP1 to SP2.
Service Downtime: For those administrators who have to provide 99%++ of uptime of their Exchange servers please note there will be a service downtime when you will be upgrading your Cluster Mailbox server to Exchange 2007 SP2.
Installation Files: You will need the following two installation files:-
    a. Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable - x64 Platform. File Name: WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x64.exe
Download location: Download details: Windows Installer 4.5
    b. Exchange 2007 SP2. for x64 Platform. File name: E2K7SP2EN64.exe
    Download location: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=4c4bd2a3-5e50-42b0-8bbb-2cc9afe3216a&displaylang=en&Hash=RWe0QrK9cX2ok93g8 kLN3%2beN2ijX%2f6%2fOHRFLNVZzeUol%2fg0BX%2b2FA%2bb ezuFC%2bjPLVbMyVOgT40maB%2bKWWMtULQ%3d%3d#filelist

    Sequence of Steps:
    1. Upgrade CASHUB02 :
    a. Install Windows Installer 4.5 on the operating system. Restart the server.

    b. Check whether there are any interim updates on the server. If yes uninstall interim updates. (Update rollups dont need any uninstallation)
    c. Double click setup.exe from the installation folder. The following screen will be displayed. Click on Install Microsoft Exchange Service Pack 2.

The installation will perform self check tests before starting the upgrade.

The upgrade will consist of updating Active Directory Schema first and then exchange upgrade installation.

    Click Finish. Restart the server.
Note: Point to note after server restart, the Transport log search service may give errors while starting up automatically. To increase the service time out refer to the following technote.
    How to debug Windows services
    2. Upgrade CASHUB01 :
Steps 1 a,b and c will be performed in the same sequence as above.
    Restrat the server.
    3. Upgrade MBX02 :
The steps for upgrading an Exchange 2007 CCR to SP2 is different from the procedure that we follow for non clustered servers. We will describe the steps here for CCR servers.
You can only upgrade CCR nodes by using the exchange management shell. You cannot upgrade CCR nodes by using the GUI as detailed in steps above.
The process in a gist is to upgrade the passive node first, restart, move CMS and the cluster group to the passive node, upgrade the CMS which makes the node the active one & then upgrade the initial active node and restart.
    a. Check with the cluster group command that the Server MBX01 is the active server. MBX01 will be servicing users during the upgrade process of the passive node.

    b. Execute steps 1a and 1b as above.
    c. Launch a command prompt window and navigate to the exchange 2007 sp2 installation directory. Run the command
    Setup.com /Mode:Upgrade

Setup runs the exchange pre-requisites check for the mailbox role.

Once the installation is completed successfully as shown above restart the server.

    PART-2

Now that we have upgraded CAS HUB servers and the Passive Mailbox server we are ready to upgrade the Cluster Mailbox server.
    4. Upgrade MBXCM01 (Clustered Mailbox server):
Once the passive server gets restarted and is back online, it will be running Exchange 2007 SP2. Do note that the active node is still online and serving the users. We need to upgrade the Clustered Mailbox Server (CMS) now, before we upgrade the present active node.
Before upgrading the CMS, we need to stop the CMS that is running on the active node and then move it to the passive node (upgraded server). This step will result in exchange server becoming unavailable for CMS users and hence has to be done out of hours.
Log into the passive node, launch the exchange shell and run the following command to stop the CMS. You can also do it from the console if you prefer to do so.
    Stop-ClusteredMailboxServer MBXCM01 -StopReason "SP2 Upgrade"

Confirm the step by pressing "Y".

Make sure that the cluster status is Offline.

If you execute a cluster group command you should see the following.

Once the cluster is stopped, move the CMS to the passive node from the console or by running the following command from the shell.
    Move-ClusteredMailboxServer MBXCM01 -TargetMachine MBX02 -MoveComment "SP2 Upgrade"
    Confirm the step as well.

After the move is completed if you execute a cluster group command you should see the following.

Now we will move the Cluster Group to MBX02.
Execute the command : Cluster Group "Cluster Group" /move:MBX02

Once the move is done execute the cluster group command to check you Cluster Group points to MBX02.

Navigate to the exchange 2007 sp2 installation folder /dvd and upgrade the CMS by running the following command. You can't use the console for this step.
    Setup.com /UpgradeCMS
Setup runs a pre-requisite check before upgrading the CMS.

Once the setup was completely successfully, it brought the stopped cluster online & now we have an upgraded CCR running on one node.
A cluster group command should give you the following output now.

As you can see users will be connecting to the online Clustered Mailbox server and the operation is now been serviced by MBX02.
We are now ready to upgrade MBX01.
    5. Upgrade MBX01 :
Execute steps 1a and 1b as above.
As you can only upgrade CCR nodes by using commad line.
Launch a command prompt window and navigate to the exchange 2007 sp2 installation directory. Run the command
    Setup.com /Mode:Upgrade
Setup will process the required steps and will display the below message after successful completion.

    Once completed restart MBX01 server.
To bring back cluster group and cluster mailbox box on to MBX01 server execute the below commands from the Exchange Management Shell in the same sequence.
    a. Stop-ClusteredMailboxServer MBXCM01 -StopReason "SP2 Upgrade"
    b. Move-ClusteredMailboxServer MBXCM01 -TargetMachine MBX01 -MoveComment "SP2 Upgrade"
    c. Cluster Group "Cluster Group" /move:MBX01
After successful completion of the above commads execute the "Cluster Group" command to check the status.

    6. Testing After upgrade
Its a good practive to do some basic testing after the upgrade. Following are a few important areas that you can test.
    1. OWA can be accessed from internet.
    2. Autodiscovery for Outlook Clients is working.
    3. Sending and Receving Emails Internally/Externally.
    4. If you have ISA server ,test the Rules are working.
    5. Cluster Replication. Take note of Status: Healthy for storage groups.
    6. Windows Services of all the Exchange server are started corrrectly.
    7. OAB download for Outlook Clients is working.
    8. Active Sync.
    9. If you have any Blackberry Servers test lookup and mail routing from devices.
    10. Any other applications tied to Exchange.
    Summary
Hopefully you have seen within the two part of this article how to upgrade from Exchange 2007 SP1 to SP2. There is no doubt that many organizations will be looking to upgrade to Exchange 2007 SP2 if they have not done so already to prepare migration to Exchange 2010 in the near future
