Trouble Configuring RPC/HTTPS

I've recently went through hell with a couple of clients getting RPC/HTTPS working on some laptops. It's been a truly difficult proposition from time to time.
The basic prerequisites for RPC/HTTPS are Outlook 2003 with hotfix 331320 installed running on Windows XP with sp1. Windows XP can either be XP Home or XP Professional.
Outlook 2003 can be installed on top of Office 2003, Office XP, Office 2000 or Works 200x. The possible permutations are large.
Firstly, if you have both Works and an Office suite installed, get rid of Works (this may be harder than you think, see KB 810815 for some good links to several removal articles).
Second, install all the recent Office service packs. Office 2000 requires at least service pack 3, and Office XP should be at service pack 3. Office 2003 will work out of the box. Install the hotfix 331320 after you service pack Office.
Third, while setting up the Outlook/MAPI profile, turn off: real-time anti-virus scanners, firewalls, and anything that affects your network.
Fourth, exit AOL in your system tray! And if you have MindSpring or FastConnect some other dial-up or DSL or cable provider application, exit it too (as long as this isn't going to terminate your Internet connection).
Fifth (and this is the complicated one), go to Start -> Control Panel -> Networks -> Advanced -> Advanced Settings... and verify that “Local Area Connection“ and “Wireless Connection“ are on the top of the “Connections“ list.
Sixth, check KB 830914 to verify that RPC is set up properly.
Seventh, verify that TCP/IP ports 80, 443, 6001 and 6004 are open from your desktop to the Exchange 2003 Server.
Once all this is done, you're ready to make an “easy” install of RPC/HTTPS happen. In my experience so far, over 90% of installations go without a hitch.
But those other 10% - they are a doozie...
